Transferring eBooks to your eReader does not require an active internet connection, cloud services, or complex software. Sideloading via USB remains the most reliable and universal method across all eReader brands, including Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook, and Nook.

This guide outlines the standard process for transferring files manually.

Prerequisites

Before beginning, ensure you have the following:

  1. A computer (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
  2. A compatible USB cable (typically USB-C or Micro-USB). Note: Ensure the cable supports data transfer, as some cables are wired only for charging.
  3. Your eBook files (EPUB, PDF, or AZW3, depending on your device).

Compatibility Note: Kobo and most non-Kindle eReaders read EPUB directly. Kindle accepts EPUB through Amazon’s Send to Kindle service, which converts it; for a manual USB transfer to Kindle, AZW3 is the safer choice.

The Transfer Process

The procedure is fundamentally identical across operating systems and device manufacturers.

Step 1: Connect the Device

  1. Connect the eReader to your computer using the USB cable.
  2. The eReader screen will typically prompt you to confirm the connection. Tap Connect or Transfer Files.
  3. The device will appear on your computer as an external USB storage drive.
    • On Windows: Open File Explorer and look under “This PC”.
    • On macOS: The drive will appear on the Desktop or in the Finder sidebar.
    • On Linux: The drive will mount automatically in your file manager.

Step 2: Locate the Documents Folder

Navigate into the eReader’s internal storage directory. You must place your eBooks in the correct folder for the device to recognize them:

  • Kindle: Open the documents folder (or documents/Downloads).
  • Kobo: You can place files anywhere in the root directory, though creating a dedicated Books folder is recommended for organization.
  • PocketBook: Open the root directory or the Downloads folder.
  • Nook: Open the My Files > Books folder.

Step 3: Transfer the Files

  1. Open a second file explorer window containing your eBook files.
  2. Drag and drop (or copy and paste) the files from your computer into the appropriate folder on your eReader.
  3. Wait for the file transfer to complete. Do not disconnect the cable during this process.

Step 4: Safely Eject

To prevent data corruption, you must safely eject the device before physically disconnecting the cable.

  • Windows: Right-click the eReader drive and select Eject.
  • macOS: Click the eject icon next to the drive in Finder, or drag the drive icon to the Trash.
  • Linux: Click the eject icon in your file manager.

Once the computer confirms it is safe to remove the hardware, unplug the USB cable. The eReader will process the new files and add them to your library automatically.

Troubleshooting

If your device is not recognized by your computer, try the following steps:

  1. Change the cable: Try a different USB cable, ensuring it is a data cable and not a charge-only cable.
  2. Change the port: Plug the cable directly into the motherboard or laptop body, avoiding USB hubs or adapters.
  3. Restart the device: Reboot your eReader and try again.

For users managing large libraries, software like Calibre or Liber can automate this transfer process and handle format conversions automatically. However, for simple file transfers, drag-and-drop remains the standard.
