About

Hi, I'm Santiago.

Liber is built by one person. This is who, and why.

I've used Calibre for years, and I still think it's a remarkable piece of software: it converts almost anything, it runs everywhere, and it kept my library in order for a long time. But every time I opened it I had the same two thoughts. The first one was that it does everything and it's still hard to use: two hundred buttons, dialogs from another decade, and a learning curve most readers never climb.

The second was a list of things I wanted done differently. I wanted to find a book and download it without leaving the app, instead of combing through the web first. I wanted to read it right there, in something that feels like a reading app rather than a separate tool from another era. I wanted covers and details to fill themselves in, and sending a book to my Kindle to be one click, with the right format picked for me. And I wanted all of it to be simple enough for someone like my father to use without help, and good-looking enough that I'd actually want to open it myself.

That's Liber. Drag a book in and it's in your library, with its cover and its details. Search Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, the Internet Archive or your own catalogue and download straight into it. Read EPUB, PDF, comics and manga in a reader with themes, highlights and notes. Pick your eReader once, send books to it in one click, and Liber converts them on the way. And if you're coming from Calibre, Liber finds your library and brings it over whole, with the details you already had.

Who's behind it

I'm Santiago Valle, a telecommunications engineer with a master's degree and several years working in cybersecurity. Liber is an independent project, built and run by one person: me. There is no "team" behind the name. When you write to support, I'm the one who answers.

Working in security shapes some of the decisions you'll find in Liber:

  • Your library stays yours. It lives in plain folders on your own disk, which you can open without Liber. No account, and nothing to lock you in.
  • No ads, anywhere. Not in the library, not in the reader, not ever.
  • Only what's written down. The only thing Liber sends me is anonymous usage stats, which you can switch off, and never anything about your books. The complete list of what leaves your computer, and where it goes, is in the privacy policy.

Where it's going

Liber is free, and the essentials will stay free: importing, reading, converting and sending your books, with no limit on the size of your library. Later there will be an optional Premium for the extras that cost money to run, such as AI features and encrypted cloud backup. It isn't available yet, and nothing will be taken out of the free version to make room for it.
